MERCURY Consortium : MERCURY invites new Undergraduate Colleges to join the Consortium

Since the formation of MERCURY Maria Gomez has moved from Vassar College to Mt. Holyoke College. This summer Carol Parish is moving from Hobart and William Smith Colleges to Richmond University. They remain members of MERCURY along with Marc Zimmer of Connecticut College and George Shields. Four of our original members have left the consortium and we have added Maria Nagan of Truman State University, Kirksville, MO, Tricia Shepherd of Westminster College, Salt Lake City, Utah, Glenisson de Oliveira of Rhode Island College, and Wingfield Glassey of The College of Wooster, Wooster, OH. An article by Professor Shields appeared in the December 2002 CUR Quarterly. The article, "The Benefits of Forming a Consortium for an NSF-MRI Proposal" is part of the Quarterly's Focus on the National Science Foundation's Major Research Instrumentation Program.

MERCURY Consortium : Supercomputer Acquired for Student/Faculty Research

As part of the Undergraduate Chemistry Supercomputer Research Consortium project, funded by the National Science Foundation, the chemistry department at Hamilton college has aquired a supercomputer for student and faculty research. The supercomputer is an SGI Origin 300 with 32 processors, 32 gigabytes of memory and nearly a terabyte of disk space. More...

Professor of Chemistry George Shields received a $782,220 grant from the National Science Foundation’s Major Research Instrumentation grant program. The grant allowed for a consortium of seven northeastern liberal arts institutions to acquire a supercomputer for various computational chemistry research projects.
